The Kingsport elite are asking the public to rally behind two Chrysler dealers in Kingsport, Tennessee.
The Kingsport Chamber of Commerce via the Kingsport Times-News is asking citizens to get involved by contacting U.S Senators and Representatives regarding the unfairness of the Chrysler reduction plan and the hardship it is causing local Kingsport dealerships.
Alley’s Chrysler Dodge and Don Hill Jeep in Kingsport will lose their franchises as part of Chrysler’s restructuring plan. These two Chrysler dealers need to be thankful for the good ride that they have had as Chrysler dealers and move on.
I don’t recall the Kingsport Chamber putting out a similar plea when other Kingsport employers laid off their workers. It appears that we have a double standard here in that the Chamber is willing to help one of its own, but not help those that have lost their jobs. What has the Chamber and the City of Kingsport done to organize job fairs for laid off workers?
Oh by the way, I guess the Kingsport Times-News would lose its advertising money that it get from these two dealers.
The Detroit Free Press reported that the criteria for dealer closures included sales volume, customer service scores, local market share and average household income in the immediate area.
It appears that the economic climate in Kingsport area has not been doing so well for these local Chrysler dealers. Chrysler has stated that the “rejected dealers” accounted for 14 percent of its overall sales volume and that half of them sell fewer than 100 vehicles a year.
Kingsport elite need to move their focus to the overall picture with the auto companies and consider the amount of taxpayer money that has gone into the auto companies to keep them open.

WASHINGTON — President Obama forced Chrysler into federal bankruptcy protection on Thursday so it could pursue a lifesaving alliance with the Italian automaker Fiat, in yet another extraordinary intervention into private industry by the federal government.

People who once held jobs as chefs, truck drivers, industrial buyers, retirement home managers and car dealers will pass through the doors. Some will have master’s degrees and others won’t have graduated from high school; none will have had any luck — yet — finding a job in this hard economy.
