Job fairs filling to capacity

April 14th, 2009 No comments

Job fairs are getting more competitive. Recent events across the nation drew thousands of people and one fair was so packed organizers had to turn people away.

In New Hampshire, organizers had expected 5,000 people to show up at the Project Economy Job Fair. Twice that many showed up in the first two hours.

April 9th, 2009 No comments

A higher-than-expected turnout at a New Hampshire job fair has forced organizers to turn away throngs of job seekers.

More than 10,000 people showed up Thursday for the event at Southern New Hampshire University’s athletic complex in Manchester. The job fair had been heavily promoted on television, but organizers expected just 5,000 participants.

Job center struggles with massive need

April 6th, 2009 No comments

The doors aren’t even open at WorkSource Portland Metro East, and yet a line is already starting to form outside the squat tan office building.

It’s just before 8 a.m., and people are anxious to start looking for work.

By 9 a.m., the publicly funded job and retraining center will be overflowing with clients. People who once held jobs as chefs, truck drivers, industrial buyers, retirement home managers and car dealers will pass through the doors. Some will have master’s degrees and others won’t have graduated from high school; none will have had any luck — yet — finding a job in this hard economy.

Heart of Knoxville center hosts job fair

April 6th, 2009 No comments

This is not the first job fair for Knoxville, Tennessee.  Are there any elected officials that wants to step up to the plate and take a leadership role in organizing a job fair for Kingsport?

KNOXVILLE — The Heart of Knoxville Career and Resource Center will host a free job fair and workshops this month to help local job seekers.

The events, which will be held at the Career Center on the Magnolia Avenue Campus of Pellissippi State Technical Community College, will be bilingual and is expected to draw representatives from various industries.

Pre-fair workshops will include “Resume/Cover Letter” at 10 a.m. on April 7 and 14; “Resume/How to Attend a Job Fair” at 6 p.m. on April 8 (presented in English and in Spanish by the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of East Tennessee); “Interviewing for Success” (with taped mock interviews), from 9 a.m. to noon on April 14.

The 2009 Spring Job Fair/Mas Trabajos, which is a combined effort of the Heart of Knoxville, Pellissippi State and the Hispanic Chamber, will be held from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on April 16.

10,000 attend job fair

March 16th, 2009 No comments

Job fairs have gotten a lot of attention lately and I wonder if local officials in the Tri-Cities, TN area will step up to help organize a job fair?  Kingsport’s unemployment rate is 10.5 percent and is expected to go much higher.

A crowd of about 10,000 came to Dodger Stadium over the weekend, but they weren’t there for a baseball game.

While the Dodgers were in Arizona for spring training, more than 80 employers set up employment booths in the parking lot just beyond the center field fence. To those who turned out Saturday, finding a job would be a home run.

Companies taking part included Coca-Cola, Lowe’s and Union Bank. And government agencies including the FBI, the Social Security Administration and the Army Corps of Engineers were there, too.

All had one thing in common: They were hiring.
