Tracking the recession: States target jobs

June 22nd, 2009 No comments

Economic development efforts don’t come to a halt during a downturn, they’re needed more than ever. Stateline.org article below, outlines some things that Tennessee is doing to help in the economic development arena.

While the Tennessee Legislature was slashing programs and laying off 700 state employees to close a budget gap last week, Gov. Phil Bredesen was touring a manufacturing company in the Swiss village of Birr.

From Switzerland, it was on to Germany and Poland for Bredesen, a two-term Democrat. The coincidence of the state’s top elected official bouncing around Europe as state lawmakers were struggling with agonizing budget choices back home may appear irresponsible at first. But Bredesen actually was on a calculated mission to attract jobs that he says could help Tennessee get through the economic downturn.

“Now is not the time to pull back or retrench,” Bredesen said.

Bredesen’s job-recruiting trip points up a little known aspect of the recession: States may be losing thousands of jobs, but many states are spending millions of dollars and approving new incentives to create jobs, with some success. Economic development efforts don’t come to a halt during a downturn; they’re needed more than ever.

Restaurateurs fear alcohol, guns would be a lethal Tennessee mix

May 14th, 2009 No comments

A bill poised for final action in the state legislature has some Memphis-area restaurateurs and nightclub managers concerned about the potentially lethal combination of guns and booze.

The bill, which could win final legislative passage as early as today, would allow people with handgun-carry permits to bring firearms into restaurants that serve alcohol as long as they do not drink.

“I guess we have to wait for someone to shoot someone before legislators change their minds,” said Danny Sumrall, chief manager of the Half Shell restaurant on Poplar.

Local Governments Get Gun Choices Under House-Passed Bill

April 20th, 2009 No comments

With the current public restroom problem at Riverfront Park, I would urge Kingsport to support handgun carry at local parks.

The House voted 77-14 Monday night to let city and county governments decide whether handguns can be carried in the local parks and recreation areas they control.

“This gives maximum flexibility to our local governments,” said sponsor Rep. Harry Tindell, D-Knoxville. “They are the people who know their parks best.”

Approval came after only brief debate. The only opponent to speak was Rep. G.A. Hardaway, D-Memphis, who said the bill amounted to “sicing the NRA on the local boys.”

The bill (HB960) now goes to the Senate, where it is sponsored by Sen. Mae Beavers, R-Mount Juliet.
