College/City Conflicts: Kingsport TN officials upset and Johnson City ready to fight

There appears to be a little battle between the City of Kingsport, TN and Northeast State Community College.

Check out the link “College conflict: Potential Northeast State Johnson City campus distresses some Kingsport officials” from the Johnson City Press to get the City of Kingsport views on Northeast State Community College putting a satellite campus in Johnson City.  It sounds like to me that Mayor Phillips of Kingsport and his pal and fishing buddy, Keith Wilson, Publisher of the Kingsport Times-News are a little bit upset that the college would even consider going to Johnson City.

I guess Mayor Phillips feels frustrated that he is losing control since another pal and fishing buddy retired as President of Northeast State Community College.

My advice to Dr. Janice Gilliam, President of Northeast State Community College is that if she thinks this is the right direction for the college, then go for it.  Fight the influence of the “good old boys club” in Kingsport and the heavy-handed tactics that they will use to stop you.

It is interesting that the Kingsport Times-News published an article on this subject on January 9, 2011 at 12:00am. which gave a link to the Johnson City Press website.  But very shortly after publishing the article, it disappeared!  If one searches on “College conflict: Potential Northeast State Johnson City campus distresses some Kingsport officials”, the article can be found in the search, but you get Invalid article when you click on the link for the Kingsport Times-News.

Why did the Kingsport Times-News take the article down?  What did they want to keep quiet?

TriCites.com gives another view below without the input from Mayor Dennis Phillips and Keith Wilson.  Click on the link below for the entire article.

WASHINGTON COUNTY, TN — Northeast State Community College wants to open a campus in Johnson City and the Downtown Centre is among its options.

According to President Dr. Janice Gilliam, Northeast State does not have any more room for classrooms or parking at the school’s main campus in Blountville. Couple that with the fact that one-third of the college’s students come from Washington County, she says it only makes sense to open a campus there.

The Ten Major Newspapers That Will Fold Or Go Digital Next

March 9th, 2009 No comments

Over the last few weeks, the newspaper industry has entered a new period of decline. The parent of the papers in Philadelphia declared bankruptcy as did the Journal Register chain. The Rocky Mountain News closed and the Seattle Post Intelligencer, owned by Hearst, will almost certainly close or only publish online. Hearst has said it will also close The San Francisco Chronicle if it cannot make massive cuts at the paper. The most recent rumor is that the company will fire half of the editorial staff. That action still may not be enough to make the property profitable.

24/7 Wall St. has created its list of the ten major daily papers that are most likely to fold or shut their print operations and only publish online.

East Tennessee newspaper ridicules it’s readers

January 21st, 2009 No comments

Newspapers readership is on the decline and it amazes me how the Kingsport Times-News continues to show their personal agenda in their reporting.

Take for example, the January 16, 2009 editorial titled, “Lawyers the only winners in annexation lawsuits” which appears to attack the folks that had lawsuits with the city.

Citizens for Home Rule has won annexation lawsuits in the past and in my view, the citizens have a right to sue the city.  I have to admire the Citizens for Home Rule attorney for being upfront with the folks who filed the lawsuits what they were up against and the costs.

The editorial seems to know what the outcome of the trial would have been and does not even consider that there could be a chance that the people may have prevailed.

My point here is, there is a pattern with the Kingsport Times-News defending the City of Kingsport.  Writing an article with the city’s viewpoint is fine, but why not do an article from the people viewpoint who are affected by annexation.  The newspaper just might find that they might retain more customers.

Attacking or ridiculing the readers is a sure way to lose business!  Is this editorial part of the City of Kingsport celebration because the lawsuits have been dropped?  See link: “Annexation lawsuits dropped in East Tennessee city”

Newspapers Editors and Publishers in a Revolving Door

January 19th, 2009 No comments

Newspapers need to understand the fast changing world of news coverage. The 24/7 news coverage from TV, the internet, and blogs are just a sampling of what are affecting the newspapers.

Newspaper print is dying. I am sure that many employees of Eastman Kodak Co, would have never thought that traditional picture taking would be taken over by digital photography. Now, what used to be a company that had 125,000 employees has now dwindled down to 27,000 employees.

Newspapers also need to understand that sometimes their personal agenda for news coverage may be a factor in driving customers away from print media.

USA Today, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Baltimore Sun, The San Jose Mercury News and The Kansas City Star have something in common, aside from some of the biggest names in an endangered industry. Kingsport Times-News coverage of local elections

January 14th, 2009 No comments

Will the Kingsport Times-News provide ample coverage for the upcoming City of Kingsport election.  There are four seats on the Board of Mayor and Alderman that are available for candidates to campaign for?

The local newspaper in my view has shown in the past, that it can be biased when it comes to political office coverage.

The top management at the Kingsport Time-News needs to report unbiased coverage concerning the candidates and should not reflect the top management views.

The newspaper needs to avoid being labeled as part of the “good old boys” club.  There are members of top management that have received political appointments by the current embattled mayor.

Do the right thing and report fairly to the readers that buy your product.

Newspaper allows columnist to attack Alderman, but will they allow a response?

December 11th, 2008 No comments

There was a newspaper article below written by Bill Bovender, a local attorney in Kingsport, Tennessee, that attacked the views that many citizens of Kingsport have in the way the Kingsport government is run.

I am sure that Bill Bovender’s talking down to and labeling citizens as GDD (gloom, doom, and depression), that do not share his view will not go down easy.  In fact, I am sure that many will find his elitism views and name calling insulting.

If one compares Alderman Shull’s ”A New Direction for Kingsport” and Bill Bovender article, they can see he is not only criticizing Shull, but distorting Shull’s positions and is resorting to name calling.

It is easy to notice how the “elites” have rolled out the old attack machine against anybody who dared to present a different view?

It is also easy to see that Bill Bovender is not exactly an innocent bystander when one Googles his name and see his involvement in city/county affairs.  If one also does a Google search on Keith Wilson, Publisher of the Kingsport Times-News and Ted Como, Managing Editor of the Kingsport Times-News, one can see they they are also not innocent bystanders because of their involvement with the city and county affairs.

The Letter to the Editor below was submitted to the Kingsport Times-News for publication in response to Bill Bovender article.  Kingsport Times-News should print Alderman Shull “A New Direction for Kingsport” and his letter to the editor.

The Kingsport Times-News in my opinion can be very stubborn on many issues.  See previous posts from this blog and check out what this blogger had to do to get porn/spam off the Times-News webpages.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A few days ago I wrote an article entitled “White Paper: A New Direction for Kingsport”. I sent it to several citizens including Mr. Bovender and the editor. Therefore, folks that read my paper will recognize his column as a thinly veiled personal attack on me. Unless the Times-News publishes my paper Mr. Bovender will have it both ways, a forum for his attack and the ability to prevent his readers from understanding the context of my views.

I spoke to Bill at length a few months ago. His views about the “progress” that Kingsport has made are sincere, almost to the point of being emotional. In my view, this emotional aspect is what has caused him to attack me. He has not contacted me personally; instead he prefers to characterize me as “negative”. I’m sure that the soldiers that I led in Iraq, my co-workers, and the Kingsporters who share my political views would disagree with this characterization.

Bill is not an ignorant person. Yet the way that he describes my positions have little relation to the merits, they are simply belittling and unhelpful to any citizen trying to understand the issues. Why is it that some insist on demonizing the opposition rather that engaging in fair debate? The overriding question before the BMA is how much “progress” can we afford and at what pace?

I am open to discuss and explain my positions with any citizen. An examination of my voting record will reveal that I supported several measures that Bill would call “progressive”. Most importantly I “positively” supported a resolution to cut property taxes which was recently defeated 2-5 by the BMA.

Bill, some free advice – stick to the issues, simply attacking my credibility won’t work. Kingsporters are smarter than that.

Below, is the Kingsport Times-News article written by Bill Bovender that appeared in the Sunday December 7, 2008 newspaper.

In my opinion Bill Bovender attack on certain BMA members is not exactly stating their real positions and Bill Bovender appears to be speaking for the elites who can be labeled as TB&S (tax, borrow and spend)

Gloom, Doom and Depression crowd should get with the program

There are a few people around Kingsport with political aspirations who do not view the progressive sea change the Model City has experienced over the past few years as a positive thing. If one were to put a label on their attitude, it would be that they are purveyors of Gloom, Doom and Depression or GDD.

Some of the GDD’s ideas include: Let’s return to the good ole 1950s, because the city’s ruling class has gone too far, too fast. Debt reduction should be the number one spending priority — not education, infrastructure, etc. “Economic development” is deemed by GDD as a bad word. John Adams Elementary School is a waste of tax dollars. The at-large election of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen should be trashed, with a ward system being utilized. I cannot wait for the ward bosses to appear. Well be just like Chicago. GDD claims city leaders are “elitist” and have no “vision.” Want elitism? Go to an “old south” town. Kingsport is about as anti-elite as any place you can find.

The attitude of GDD reminds me of some of Spencer Tracy’s lines in “Inherit the Wind,” the great movie about the Scopes Monkey Trial. Tracy played a fictionalized Clarence Darrow, who actually defended Scopes. At one point during the movie’s version of the trial, he says something like “… with flags flying and banners waving, we’ll march back, backward into time.  “I’ll be the first to admit that there is merit in some of what the GD and D’ers are saying.

However, having lived here for 33 years, I find the many things going on — downtown education center, new restaurants, new retail, job creation — make this the most exhilarating and promising time I have experienced.

It is hard to understand negativity. Some just exude it. The glass is half-empty is their mantra. Is the country experiencing tough times? Yes. Must Kingsport prioritize? Yes. I thought that was what the city leaders have been doing.

Most of the BMA, Mayor Phillips, and City Manager Campbell have awakened a sleeping giant  Don’t think for a minute surrounding cities have not noticed.

There were plenty of people in John-son City who claimed John Campbell and the majority of the City Commission were without “vision,” even “fools,” for suggesting a new road be built connecting north Johnson City with ETSU. State of Franklin Road appears to have weathered those narrow-minded nihilists.

There is more “going on” in Kingsport than almost at anytime in decades. But, it is the progress and growth which Kingsport is experiencing which seem to bring out the cavedwellers, nay-sayers, and general “agin it” crowd.

There is real danger that, in writing this column and commenting on the ideas of GDD, I will end up aiding rather than hindering the movement GDD covets.

I hope that is not the case. Never in the past 30 years has Kingsport been as exciting—a fun place to live. The investments being made by the city will yield tremendous returns. We may well be able to keep our best and brightest kids around.

I was recently involved in a lawsuit where one issue was the alleged inability of a company to recruit people to come to this area to work.

Supposedly, the potential candidates described Kingsport as “backwards,” “nothing to do,” the “boondocks,” and just a “smelly little town.”

The various projects, expenditures, annexations and activities initiated by Phillips, Campbell, and the BMA fly in the face of those who were not interested in moving here. The Gloom, Doom and Depression coterie needs to get on the team.

The Tennessean’s bias leads to further losses

December 10th, 2008 No comments

Newspapers have been taking a hit because of the economy and declining readers.  Will the Kingsport Times-News continue to fall because of it’s bias reporting.  The rest of the story below is from Tennessee News Platoon

As the “Greenie Newspaper” loses more green due to their own editorial contempt for many of their conservative customer base who have cancelled their subscriptions, new electronic media options availability, and a constricting economy. The unfortunate result was yesterday’s announcement of yet another layoff of 10%.I wish the best for those individuals that find themselves without work. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

I only hope that the Gannett management team might consider providing more balanced coverage in both their news and editorial departments in order to provide a consumer product that actually might appeal to a conservative readership in one of the Reddest states in this past 2008 election.

Tennessean cuts more than 90 jobs (The City Paper)

The paper has offered severance and health insurance packages to the discharged employees based on their tenure. Among the veteran journalists affected were Davidson A.M. Editor Carol Stuart (who had been with the paper more than 15 years), copy editor and food writer Dana Franklin, Williamson A.M. Community News Editor Susan Leathers and designer Leigh Singleton. Singleton had joined The Tennessean when the Nashville Banner folded in 1998.

A blog maintained by a former Gannett editor has carried continuous news updates all day from newspapers around the country. Its tally of total job losses had topped 1,400 by 6 p.m. today. Deep cuts were happening at The Courier-Journal of Louisville, The Arizona Republic and several other major papers.

Yard signs are needed to get political coverage by East Tennessee newspaper

July 12th, 2008 No comments

Cup of Joe Powell blog has an amazing post concerning the Kingsport Times-News tactics in refusing coverage for political candidates. Check out the Cup of Joe Powell post to see the type of questions that has to be answered in order for the reporter Hank Haynes to provide coverage.

Kingsport Times0News reporter Hank Haynes can refuse to provide coverage for Rob Russell or other candidates, but the public also can choose whether or not to subscribe to the Kingsport Times-News. The Kingsport Times-News is not the only newspaper in the area where citizens can obtain news. Below are some alternative sites for news on Rob Russell.

East TN newspaper under attack by blogs and newspapers

July 11th, 2008 No comments

Kingsport, Tennessee needs another newspaper that can offer unbiased views.  It is my feeling that the Kingsport Times-News has been around too long and thinks they are the decider of what the readers should read.

I also feel that they are the mouthpiece for the City of Kingsport whenever the city officials wants a little PR.  When one does a little research, it is easy to see the close ties that the newspaper has with the local government officials.  With the close ties, I feel it is much more difficult for the newspaper to objectively cover local government issues when the issues are negative.

I lost respect for the newspaper over my efforts to get the porn off their web pages.  See Publisher of Kingsport Times-News continues to promote porn.  Also, see my other posts concerning the Kingsport Time-News

The Bristol Herald Courier got into a little fight with the Kingsport Times-News concerning their bias coverage for the David Davis campaign.  See Kingsport Slimes-News Lives Up To Its Reputation and Is Kingsport Times-News the official mouthpiece of the Davis re-election machine?

Now, blogs are getting in on the action concerning Kingsport Times-News bias coverage of political campaigns.  See the following link from the blog DeMarCaTionVille Reporter Hank Hayes Keeps Painting the Inroads Red and the blog Cup of Joe Powwell Kingsport Reporter Is The Decider

The blog No Silence Here at the Knoxville New-Sentinel had the following post below.

Joe Powell: A peek at Kingsport Times-News reporter Hank Hayes’ email on why he does not cover Democrat candidates for Congress is presented via DeMarCaTionVille. Hayes is the Decider of who gets news coverage, and he has decided that it’s a Republicans-Only issue.

DeMarCaTionVille: Here are the questions folks, particularly for those of you in the business: What entitles a candidate to press coverage? Should amount of coverage correlate to amount of money raised for the campaign? So, how much money do candidates need before they get a mention? Should there be a formula for this – like if you raise over $10,000, we’ll print your name twice?

Should politicians be required to call reporters and beg for coverage? I understand you can’t cover everyone who files to run, but Russell HAS been making the rounds, attending rallies and party meetings (in Sullivan County no less) and talking with people across the district. If Hank would read something other than his own Republobabble or the GOP press releases in his inbox, he might know this. And he can’t make the argument that he doesn’t cover political rallies or fundraising events because that wouldn’t be true.

These are some good, tough questions. My experience taught me it’s easier to simply put something in the paper than it is trying to debate a candidate. I have no contextual knowledge on this one but if Russell is making an earnest effort, that warrants some coverage. But if one thinks Ralph Nader is going to get the same coverage as Obama and McCain, well, that ain’t gonna happen. Also, it would behove a serious candidate to contact and connect with local media. If media outlets don’t know about you, well…

At the end of the day, it is so much easier to be fair than it is to try and explain why something can’t be done.
