Newspaper allows columnist to attack Alderman, but will they allow a response?

December 11th, 2008 No comments

There was a newspaper article below written by Bill Bovender, a local attorney in Kingsport, Tennessee, that attacked the views that many citizens of Kingsport have in the way the Kingsport government is run.

I am sure that Bill Bovender’s talking down to and labeling citizens as GDD (gloom, doom, and depression), that do not share his view will not go down easy.  In fact, I am sure that many will find his elitism views and name calling insulting.

If one compares Alderman Shull’s ”A New Direction for Kingsport” and Bill Bovender article, they can see he is not only criticizing Shull, but distorting Shull’s positions and is resorting to name calling.

It is easy to notice how the “elites” have rolled out the old attack machine against anybody who dared to present a different view?

It is also easy to see that Bill Bovender is not exactly an innocent bystander when one Googles his name and see his involvement in city/county affairs.  If one also does a Google search on Keith Wilson, Publisher of the Kingsport Times-News and Ted Como, Managing Editor of the Kingsport Times-News, one can see they they are also not innocent bystanders because of their involvement with the city and county affairs.

The Letter to the Editor below was submitted to the Kingsport Times-News for publication in response to Bill Bovender article.  Kingsport Times-News should print Alderman Shull “A New Direction for Kingsport” and his letter to the editor.

The Kingsport Times-News in my opinion can be very stubborn on many issues.  See previous posts from this blog and check out what this blogger had to do to get porn/spam off the Times-News webpages.

Feel free to leave a comment.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

A few days ago I wrote an article entitled “White Paper: A New Direction for Kingsport”. I sent it to several citizens including Mr. Bovender and the editor. Therefore, folks that read my paper will recognize his column as a thinly veiled personal attack on me. Unless the Times-News publishes my paper Mr. Bovender will have it both ways, a forum for his attack and the ability to prevent his readers from understanding the context of my views.

I spoke to Bill at length a few months ago. His views about the “progress” that Kingsport has made are sincere, almost to the point of being emotional. In my view, this emotional aspect is what has caused him to attack me. He has not contacted me personally; instead he prefers to characterize me as “negative”. I’m sure that the soldiers that I led in Iraq, my co-workers, and the Kingsporters who share my political views would disagree with this characterization.

Bill is not an ignorant person. Yet the way that he describes my positions have little relation to the merits, they are simply belittling and unhelpful to any citizen trying to understand the issues. Why is it that some insist on demonizing the opposition rather that engaging in fair debate? The overriding question before the BMA is how much “progress” can we afford and at what pace?

I am open to discuss and explain my positions with any citizen. An examination of my voting record will reveal that I supported several measures that Bill would call “progressive”. Most importantly I “positively” supported a resolution to cut property taxes which was recently defeated 2-5 by the BMA.

Bill, some free advice – stick to the issues, simply attacking my credibility won’t work. Kingsporters are smarter than that.

Below, is the Kingsport Times-News article written by Bill Bovender that appeared in the Sunday December 7, 2008 newspaper.

In my opinion Bill Bovender attack on certain BMA members is not exactly stating their real positions and Bill Bovender appears to be speaking for the elites who can be labeled as TB&S (tax, borrow and spend)

Gloom, Doom and Depression crowd should get with the program

There are a few people around Kingsport with political aspirations who do not view the progressive sea change the Model City has experienced over the past few years as a positive thing. If one were to put a label on their attitude, it would be that they are purveyors of Gloom, Doom and Depression or GDD.

Some of the GDD’s ideas include: Let’s return to the good ole 1950s, because the city’s ruling class has gone too far, too fast. Debt reduction should be the number one spending priority — not education, infrastructure, etc. “Economic development” is deemed by GDD as a bad word. John Adams Elementary School is a waste of tax dollars. The at-large election of the Board of Mayor and Aldermen should be trashed, with a ward system being utilized. I cannot wait for the ward bosses to appear. Well be just like Chicago. GDD claims city leaders are “elitist” and have no “vision.” Want elitism? Go to an “old south” town. Kingsport is about as anti-elite as any place you can find.

The attitude of GDD reminds me of some of Spencer Tracy’s lines in “Inherit the Wind,” the great movie about the Scopes Monkey Trial. Tracy played a fictionalized Clarence Darrow, who actually defended Scopes. At one point during the movie’s version of the trial, he says something like “… with flags flying and banners waving, we’ll march back, backward into time.  “I’ll be the first to admit that there is merit in some of what the GD and D’ers are saying.

However, having lived here for 33 years, I find the many things going on — downtown education center, new restaurants, new retail, job creation — make this the most exhilarating and promising time I have experienced.

It is hard to understand negativity. Some just exude it. The glass is half-empty is their mantra. Is the country experiencing tough times? Yes. Must Kingsport prioritize? Yes. I thought that was what the city leaders have been doing.

Most of the BMA, Mayor Phillips, and City Manager Campbell have awakened a sleeping giant  Don’t think for a minute surrounding cities have not noticed.

There were plenty of people in John-son City who claimed John Campbell and the majority of the City Commission were without “vision,” even “fools,” for suggesting a new road be built connecting north Johnson City with ETSU. State of Franklin Road appears to have weathered those narrow-minded nihilists.

There is more “going on” in Kingsport than almost at anytime in decades. But, it is the progress and growth which Kingsport is experiencing which seem to bring out the cavedwellers, nay-sayers, and general “agin it” crowd.

There is real danger that, in writing this column and commenting on the ideas of GDD, I will end up aiding rather than hindering the movement GDD covets.

I hope that is not the case. Never in the past 30 years has Kingsport been as exciting—a fun place to live. The investments being made by the city will yield tremendous returns. We may well be able to keep our best and brightest kids around.

I was recently involved in a lawsuit where one issue was the alleged inability of a company to recruit people to come to this area to work.

Supposedly, the potential candidates described Kingsport as “backwards,” “nothing to do,” the “boondocks,” and just a “smelly little town.”

The various projects, expenditures, annexations and activities initiated by Phillips, Campbell, and the BMA fly in the face of those who were not interested in moving here. The Gloom, Doom and Depression coterie needs to get on the team.

The Tennessean’s bias leads to further losses

December 10th, 2008 No comments

Newspapers have been taking a hit because of the economy and declining readers.  Will the Kingsport Times-News continue to fall because of it’s bias reporting.  The rest of the story below is from Tennessee News Platoon

As the “Greenie Newspaper” loses more green due to their own editorial contempt for many of their conservative customer base who have cancelled their subscriptions, new electronic media options availability, and a constricting economy. The unfortunate result was yesterday’s announcement of yet another layoff of 10%.I wish the best for those individuals that find themselves without work. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families.

I only hope that the Gannett management team might consider providing more balanced coverage in both their news and editorial departments in order to provide a consumer product that actually might appeal to a conservative readership in one of the Reddest states in this past 2008 election.

Tennessean cuts more than 90 jobs (The City Paper)

The paper has offered severance and health insurance packages to the discharged employees based on their tenure. Among the veteran journalists affected were Davidson A.M. Editor Carol Stuart (who had been with the paper more than 15 years), copy editor and food writer Dana Franklin, Williamson A.M. Community News Editor Susan Leathers and designer Leigh Singleton. Singleton had joined The Tennessean when the Nashville Banner folded in 1998.

A blog maintained by a former Gannett editor has carried continuous news updates all day from newspapers around the country. Its tally of total job losses had topped 1,400 by 6 p.m. today. Deep cuts were happening at The Courier-Journal of Louisville, The Arizona Republic and several other major papers.

Kingsport, Tennessee discriminates against out of town newspaper

August 25th, 2008 No comments

J. Todd Foster, the managing editor of the Bristol Herald Courier expresses his frustration below with the Kingsport, Tennessee school system over his sports reporter not being treated fairly.

It must be that the Bristol Herald Courier is not a member of the “good old boys club”.  To be a member, you must say only good things about the City of Kingsport.  It took me a while, but I figured it out, that the Kingsport Times News is nothing more than the public relations department for the City of Kingsport.

More hard hitting newspaper coverage is badly needed in Kingsport for issues that include the city government and school system.  Welcome to Kingsport, Todd!  Please provide more Kingsport coverage in your newspaper.

The good folks at Dobyns-Bennett High School apparently don’t understand the meaning of the term “press box.” Either that, or they were engaging in an act of discrimination on Thursday night when they refused to admit one of our sportswriters to the press section to cover the D-B football game with Tennessee High. Yard signs are needed to get political coverage by East Tennessee newspaper

July 12th, 2008 No comments

Cup of Joe Powell blog has an amazing post concerning the Kingsport Times-News tactics in refusing coverage for political candidates. Check out the Cup of Joe Powell post to see the type of questions that has to be answered in order for the reporter Hank Haynes to provide coverage.

Kingsport Times0News reporter Hank Haynes can refuse to provide coverage for Rob Russell or other candidates, but the public also can choose whether or not to subscribe to the Kingsport Times-News. The Kingsport Times-News is not the only newspaper in the area where citizens can obtain news. Below are some alternative sites for news on Rob Russell.

East TN newspaper under attack by blogs and newspapers

July 11th, 2008 No comments

Kingsport, Tennessee needs another newspaper that can offer unbiased views.  It is my feeling that the Kingsport Times-News has been around too long and thinks they are the decider of what the readers should read.

I also feel that they are the mouthpiece for the City of Kingsport whenever the city officials wants a little PR.  When one does a little research, it is easy to see the close ties that the newspaper has with the local government officials.  With the close ties, I feel it is much more difficult for the newspaper to objectively cover local government issues when the issues are negative.

I lost respect for the newspaper over my efforts to get the porn off their web pages.  See Publisher of Kingsport Times-News continues to promote porn.  Also, see my other posts concerning the Kingsport Time-News

The Bristol Herald Courier got into a little fight with the Kingsport Times-News concerning their bias coverage for the David Davis campaign.  See Kingsport Slimes-News Lives Up To Its Reputation and Is Kingsport Times-News the official mouthpiece of the Davis re-election machine?

Now, blogs are getting in on the action concerning Kingsport Times-News bias coverage of political campaigns.  See the following link from the blog DeMarCaTionVille Reporter Hank Hayes Keeps Painting the Inroads Red and the blog Cup of Joe Powwell Kingsport Reporter Is The Decider

The blog No Silence Here at the Knoxville New-Sentinel had the following post below.

Joe Powell: A peek at Kingsport Times-News reporter Hank Hayes’ email on why he does not cover Democrat candidates for Congress is presented via DeMarCaTionVille. Hayes is the Decider of who gets news coverage, and he has decided that it’s a Republicans-Only issue.

DeMarCaTionVille: Here are the questions folks, particularly for those of you in the business: What entitles a candidate to press coverage? Should amount of coverage correlate to amount of money raised for the campaign? So, how much money do candidates need before they get a mention? Should there be a formula for this – like if you raise over $10,000, we’ll print your name twice?

Should politicians be required to call reporters and beg for coverage? I understand you can’t cover everyone who files to run, but Russell HAS been making the rounds, attending rallies and party meetings (in Sullivan County no less) and talking with people across the district. If Hank would read something other than his own Republobabble or the GOP press releases in his inbox, he might know this. And he can’t make the argument that he doesn’t cover political rallies or fundraising events because that wouldn’t be true.

These are some good, tough questions. My experience taught me it’s easier to simply put something in the paper than it is trying to debate a candidate. I have no contextual knowledge on this one but if Russell is making an earnest effort, that warrants some coverage. But if one thinks Ralph Nader is going to get the same coverage as Obama and McCain, well, that ain’t gonna happen. Also, it would behove a serious candidate to contact and connect with local media. If media outlets don’t know about you, well…

At the end of the day, it is so much easier to be fair than it is to try and explain why something can’t be done.

At the June 16, 2008 Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, it was approved to buy two properties.  One at 217 Revere Street and the other at 214 Clay Street.  John Campbell, City Manager, stated that the Revere Street property was needed so they could tear down the building and put in utility lines for the Higher Education Building.  Aldermen Marsh stated that the price for the building was out of line for the area and that the property was not needed for the Higher Education Building.  He also stated that the city owned two alleys next to the property where the utilities could be run.  The building was appraised at $86,000 and seven annual payments of $17,075.36 were to be made which would make a total of $119,523.53 paid for the property.

The 214 Clay Street property was appraised at $110,000, but the city is going to pay $140,000.  Again, this was pitched as needed for the Higher Education Building.  Aldermen Marsh and Shull stated that this property was not needed for the Higher Education Building.

Although these two properties were pitched as needed for the Higher Education Building, the bottom line is that the City of Kingsport thinks they are an eyesore and that is the reason for the purchase.

Aldermen Marsh and Shull voted against purchasing these two properties.  Aldermen Marsh and Shull were discussing the issue after the vote and were basically told by Alderman Joh to shut-up.  She stated that it was a moot point to discuss since it was already voted on.

The purchase of these two properties will require about 518 homeowners city taxes to pay for the properties.

Also, at the BMA meeting the 2008-2009 budget was voted on and approved.  Aldermen Marsh and Shull voted against the budget.  Aldermen Marsh stated with the economy the way it was now, it was business as usual with the budget.  He stated that the ‘Board of Education had cut their budget, but the city had not.  He stated that it was more big government that has added more people and had no energy policy.  He stated he had a concern with the city manager’s pay being buried in the budget and it should be separate from the budget so it could be discussed.  Aldermen Shull stated that he agreed with Aldermen Marsh’s concerns.   Note, in a previous meeting, Alderman Shull expressed a concern over the city manager’s pay  He stated that it could be as high as $200k with this budget.

Below is the very detailed BMA Meeting coverage by the City of Kingsport newspaper (Kingsport Time-News)

In other business Tuesday, the BMA approved the city’s $172 million budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1. Aldermen Ken Marsh and Pat Shull cast “nay” votes in the 5-2 decision. Both said the BMA should have done more to try and trim the budge

Kingsport Slimes-News Lives Up To Its Reputation

June 15th, 2008 No comments

The drama continues as the Bristol Herald Courier and the Kingsport Times-News duke it out over U.S. Rep. David Davis, R-Tenn., and his congressional earmarks.  The Bristol Herald Courier headline “Kingsport Slimes-News Lives Up To Its Reputation” is well chosen in my opinion.

The Kingsport Times-News is the same newspaper that will provide news on a subject, but cuts off debate on the subject (see post  “Newspaper cuts off debate on red-light cameras”) It would not surprise me if the Mayor of Kingsport called his buddies at the Kingsport Times-News to cool it on certain subjects because it was causing too much heat for the city.

Also, lest I forget,  the Kingsport Times-News is the same newspaper allowed porn to be promoted on their website (see post “Publisher of Kingsport Times-News continues to promote porn

J. Todd Foster:  Kingsport Slimes-News Lives Up To Its Reputation

Kingsport Times-News reporter Hank Hayes has a bright future flacking for politicians. Lord knows, he’s better at it than at journalism.

Hayes used the news columns of his newspaper on Thursday to attack an investigative article we published a week ago about U.S. Rep. David Davis, R-Tenn., and his congressional earmarks. That same day, we published an editorial that noted the amount of special-interest money Davis was socking away.   Read more on Kingsport Slimes-News

Is Kingsport Times-News the official mouthpiece of the Davis re-election machine?

June 13th, 2008 No comments

The Bristol Herald Courier did an investigative article , U.S. Rep. David Davis Received Donations From Company He Secured Money For and an editorial article on June 8, 2008, Campaign Cash With Strings It appears that David Davis was not happy what was written and picked the Kingsport Time-News to give his response. Davis slams Bristol Herald Courier editorial.  On June 13, 2008 the Bristol Herald Courier contained the following editorial below

The Bristol Herald Courier wrote:  “He sent it to one of our competitors, the Kingsport Times-News, which turned it into a news story that is long on boosterism and short on substance. It appears the Times-News wishes to serve as the official mouthpiece of the Davis re-election machine.”

I am not surprised that David Davis went to the Kingsport Times-News.  In my opinion the Kingsport Times-News sometimes is the public relations department for city governments and politicians.  Maybe there could be an investigative article on this subject in the future.

In my opinion, David Davis’ problem is not with the Bristol Herald Courier, but instead needs to look within at his Greed problem.

Editorial from June 11:

Desperate to defend his highly suspect fundraising and earmarking practices, U.S. Rep. David Davis lashed out at this newspaper Wednesday.

Too bad his response missed the mark. It dealt only with a single earmark on behalf of a defense contractor rather than the serious ethical questions raised by his practice of taking campaign cash from all manner of corporate interests.

Federal fundraising records indicate Davis is quite cozy with Big Tobacco, oil and coal companies, health insurers (who profit by denying coverage to the sick) and Florida sugar cane growers. He’s gorged himself at the special interest trough. But it is voters who might retch after discovering whose interests Davis protects. As St. Matthew’s Gospel says, one cannot serve two masters.   Read more on David Davis

Publisher of Kingsport Times-News continues to promote porn

May 18th, 2008 No comments

Update to post: The Kingsport Times-News has cleaned up the links that I listed below in this post. It is still beyond me why the Kingsport Times-News failed to address this issue on the many occasions that it was brought to their attention. As of now, this concern has been resolved, but I’m going to hang on to the ‘yard signs’ for later use if needed.

I have been urging the Kingsport Times-News to put an end to the practice of allowing spam that includes porno links on their web pages. So far, I have been unsuccessful. It appears that they don’t care or they are in over their head.

If there are no changes after this post, then I will step up my efforts many notches to get this issue resolved. My advice for the bible belt newspaper is to get rid of the porn in your web pages.

To the customers and advertisers of the Kingsport Time-News, if you are offended by the porn that the Kingsport Times-News has on their web pages, then you should express your feelings to the newspaper.

Do we need to make yard signs as in the above picture? Do we need to boycott firms that advertise with the Kingsport Times-News? Do we need to picket in front of the Kingsport Times-News building? Kingsport Board of Mayor and Aldermen need to express their views on this issue since they are using taxpayer money to advertise with the Kingsport Times-News. Alderman Joh’s, business (Blue Ridge Properties) was sent an email on March 3, 2008 concerning this issue. Has Alderman Joh stated her views on this? Let’s see, I think her term ends next year (2009) and she might be thinking of getting reelected again. Mayor Phillips gets really mad when when an ETSU student showed a two-second clip of a woman’s backside on channel 16. It would be nice if Mayor Phillips could express the same emotion towards the Kingsport Time-News. But I guess I should not be surprised, because he has buddies at the Kingsport Times-News. What about the rest of the BMA, what are your views on this issue?

It is beyond me why Sandusky Newspapers, who owns the Kingsport Times-News, allows this issue to continue. On my blog, by far, the most hits I receive for posts are on this issue.

On March 3, 2008, the below was posted in the comments section. I am sorry to have to post it here, but feel it is necessary for the public to see what the Kingsport Times-News is promoting.

1. 6863t8319Jenny slowly stripped 400down to her brief translucent pink panties, while continuing to smoothly sway her hips, and shake her boobies, to the pounding caned music, as she moved in to give the big, blond-haired guy seated before her, a lap-dance he would remember. She straddled his thighs and slipped her arms about his neck, smiling at him, as she bucked and ground her hips, careful not to brush her crotch against the bulge of his erection. She arched her back, thrusting her shapely breasts forward, knowing the guy was aching to grasp her swaying orbs, dying to envelope her nipples with his hot mouth. But the customers were not allowed to touch the girls. well not officially! He groaned with unrequited desire, and pushed a twenty-dollar bill into the waistband of her panties, with fat, trembling fingers. She was one of three similarly attired, near naked girls, who were simultaneously writhing their sweet tushes over the laps of three seated male club members, while dozens more customers looked on, eagerly awaiting their own turn, including several women. Jenny had been working at the lap-dancing club for three weeks now, and was getting pretty good at this ultimate in sexual titivation. The money was pretty good, if you included the tips and she got plenty. She rubbed the guy face between her shapely breasts, finally allowing him to kiss and suck on her erect nipples, as she arched her spine and threw her head back, gasping with genuine pleasure. Finally the pounding musical accompaniment drew to a close and the lap-dance ended. As he pushed another twenty into the top of her flimsy underwear, she asked, in a husky voice, Would you like for me to dance for you privately, sir? They both knew what this really meant. If the guy agreed, another girl would replace her, while she was away, and her cut of the extra fee, would be a cool hundred bucks. It was the part of the job that Jennifer least liked, but she had to agree to it, if she wanted to stay employed. 6863t8319Comment by MEDVED2732 – 2008-03-03 06:24:44

Kingsport Times-News, a bible belt newspaper continues to promote porn

On March 4-7, 2008, I wrote three posts concerning the Kingsport, Tennessee Times-News allowing porn sites to promote in the comments sections on the newspaper web pages.

The Kingsport Times-News did take the offending web pages offline on March 5, 2008, but now they are back again with the porn present.

What does it take for the Times-New to get the point? It appears that they do not care about their customers and vendors who advertise in the newspaper. Do I need again to contact the 44 local clergy, local and national companies as I did before?

To the City of Kingsport, you use taxpayers money to advertise in the Time-News. Will you take a position and condemn the Times-News for allowing this to happen? (2nd request)

Some heads to to roll at the Times-News. You can start with Keith Wilson, the publisher whose lack of top management direction and oversight at the Kingsport Times-News are the reasons for this issue I cannot understand why Sandusky Newspapers, who own the Kingsport Times-News has allowed this to happen.

Post below from March 5, 2008

Kingsport Times-News promotes Pornography and Drug sales.

The Kingsport, Tennessee Times-News has allowed it’s website to be used by pornography and drug sites. The porn content is hard core and I will not give any links, but I will say that it is in the blog section and there are nine different comment pages involved. Today, the email below went to 44 religious leaders and and another email to national and local companies that advertise in the Times-Union. If it takes 44 clergy telling their congregations and many national and local advertisers to get their attention, then so be it. Maybe the loss of revenue will get their attention.

The following is a list of companies that have been alerted of this problem that advertise in the Times-News. You might want to ask them if they have expressed their concerns to the Times-News. If you are an advertiser with the Kingsport Times-News, your firm may be added to the list below. This list will grow until this practice is stopped. This blog is read by locally and nationally.

  • Wal-Mart – Bentonville, Arkansas
  • Belk – Orlando, FL
  • Blue Ridge Properties
  • ReMax Real Estate
  • State of Franklin Real Estate
  • Century 21 Real Estate
  • Hobby Lobby – Okahoma City, Ok
  • Wellmont Health Systems
  • Rick Hill Imports
  • Don Hill Automotive
  • WCYB Television
  • WEMT Television
  • WJHL Television
  • Knoxville News Sentinel
  • The Tennessean-Nashville
  • Food City

As I indicated below in the email, I had brought this to the attention of the Times-News. I also attempted to get information on the mail/email address for the CEO of Sandusky Newspapers who own many newspapers across the United States and also owns the Times-News to alert them of this problem. The Sandusky Newspaper would not give me the address where the CEO was located. I asked if they had a corporate relations person and was told that they would not provide that information, but would forward my mail to corporate headquarters. I told them that they might like to have the information quickly, but I would do it by slow mail.

There is no excuse for the Times-News to let this happen. It is apparent to me that upper management does not have a grasp on what is happening within their organization. The newspaper need to accept full responsibility for their actions and a public apology is needed.

The email below does not have some of the actual content here because this is not considered an adult site. I am sure that the religious leaders were shocked at the content I sent them.

If you are offended by Kingsport Times-News actions, then express your feeling to them.

The Kingsport Times-News comments section has hundreds of comments that has links to hard core porn sites. This has been going on for some time and one month ago I pointed it out to them. At that time the comments messages were all deleted, but now have grown back to many hundreds.

One would think that it would be safe for children to visit a newspaper webpage without fear of children being exposed to porn.

I am sending this to religious leaders in the Kingsport, Tennessee area. If you feel that it is ok for the newspaper to have porn on their site, then you don’t need to do anything. But if you have a problem with it, then take a leadership position and express your feelings to the Kingsport Times-News.

The links below have comments that are disguised as innocent subject matter, but have links to porn sites. I must warn you, it can be very graphic and be very careful because of Trojan downloader files that try to install themselves on your computer. Do not let any programs be installed on your computer. Personally, I would not click on any link without virus protection installed on the computer.

It is my feeling that this needs to stop. Times-News either needs to moderate the comments as they do the comments when users write a response to the newspaper articles or shut the comment sections down in the list below.

You may say that someone else on the email list above will contact the newspaper, but collectively it will make more of an impression if everyone expresses their concern.

You can contact the following concerning this issue. The parent company of Kingsport Times-News is Sandusky Newspapers. Sandusky also owns The Johnson City Press, Jonesborough Herald and Tribune, and The Erwin Record as well as five other newspapers in other parts of the country.

Kingsport Times-News, a bible belt newspaper continues to promote porn
