Slammed: Tight economy helps fuel surge in uninsured drivers

Maybe it’s a minor fender bender caused by someone backing out of a parking space. Or perhaps, as in Kenneth Berryhill’s case, a suspect fleeing authorities slams into your vehicle at 100 mph.

But whether an accident is large or small, odds are increasing that at least one of the drivers involved will be uninsured.

A recent study by the Insurance Research Council estimates that in 2007 about 20 percent of Tennessee drivers and 28 percent of Mississippi drivers were uninsured — ranking the Mid-South states sixth and second nationally; Arkansas, with an estimated 15 percent of uninsured motorists, ranked 15th.
