Kingsport, Tennessee votes to buy property based on two maybe’s

February 28th, 2008 Leave a comment Go to comments

At the February 19, 2008 BMA meeting, there was a proposal to buy property at 1723 Park Street in Kingsport, Tennessee for $140,000. Alderman Marsh asked the Board of Education official present, what the property would be used for.

The response was “maybe we could use it for offices”. Again, Alderman Marsh asked what else it could be used for and the response was “maybe we could use it for storage”. With two maybe’s, all the members of the BMA voted to purchase the property. It was stated that the property owner approached the city offering the property for sale.

Buying this property for the “maybe” reasons mentioned is not good enough for the taxpayers. It will take a total of 282 city homeowners property taxes to pay this $140,000. Kingsport must do a better job of explaining why the purchase is necessary!
